Day One Guide (External Consultants)

Welcome to Cantilever! You received this guide because you are a fantabulous consultant who we have brought in to bolster our core team. We love collaborating with new people and are happy to have you!!

What you need to know

  1. You should have a Primary Contact here at Cantilever. If you don’t know who your Primary Contact is, please ask the people you have been communicating with and they will clarify. This person is your go-to for any questions you have or issues you may be running into that are not solved with our handbook.
  2. Our default communication methodology is asynchronous. We have tried to write down everything you should need to know to work successfully here, but we make mistakes. Please don’t hesitate to comment in the handbook if you have any questions, or call or text your Primary Contact.
  3. You will typically interact with our team through Slack and Asana. As a consultant, we will directly assign you tasks in Asana and try to ensure they are mega clear before you start. If you are ever confused about a task, a due date, or anything else in Asana, please speak up and we’ll help!
  4. We want to see your best work and will push for excellence, but in exchange we strive to be the best client possible for you. And that means caring for you personally while also supporting you professionally. If you are working with us, we want to get to know you and support you however we can.
  5. Going through this guide is your “onboarding” process. Please don‘t start work until you have read and absorbed these materials. Expect the onboarding to take around 4 hours. You should include the time in Harvest under “Essential Non-Billable Time.”
  6. You will get paid automatically for the time you enter into Harvest. You should have access now to add your time for this onboarding; if not, speak with your Primary Contact.

Golden Rules

  • We recommend that you review Asana and Slack at least once a day, and keep up with any correspondence through there directed at you. We will at-mention you if there is anything we would like you to look at right away.
  • We recommend that you keep push notifications off for Cantilever services, we don’t want to be making your phone ding all the time!
  • We recommend that you install the desktop and mobile app versions of Harvest, Asana, Slack, etc rather than relying on the in-browser versions
  • Keep in mind that we take deadlines very seriously, and if you have a deadline we are counting on you to meet it. If you need to extend a deadline please ask at least 24 hours in advance, and please don‘t accept deadlines you don’t think are realistic.
  • We want to get to know you! While we are working together, please feel free to join our standing Monday team-wide calls at noon NYC time (just ask for the invite in Slack), and feel free to reach out to the folks you are working with to get to know them outside of work. We want to give you a warm Cantilever welcome.
  • If you feel unclear about what you are being asked to do, or uncomfortable with how things are going for any reason, please speak up. We will do whatever we can to improve your experience.
